Scientists May Have Discovered Mega Moon Orbiting Massive Planet In An Aging Galaxy

Scientists believe they have discovered the first ever alien moon. While they still can’t be sure what it is, the mass in question is roughly the size of the planet Neptune.

Trying to fathom the size of the universe and contemplate everything within it is impossible for the human mind to comprehend. What that hasn’t stopped us doing is exploring and discovering as much of it as we possibly can. Scientists and researchers discover more and more about what’s out there every single day, and it’s all pretty fascinating.

One of the latest discoveries might be the most interesting to date. That’s because if it is indeed what those who have uncovered it believe it to be, then it would be the first of its kind ever seen by humankind. A distant planet beyond our solar system, known as Kepler 1625b, has an orbit similar to Earth’s, and it may also have a moon as reported by National Geographic.

The potential of Kepler 1625b having a moon is the new discovery. Why that’s exciting is beyond our own solar system, scientists have never seen a planet with its own moon. The mass in question is a pretty big one too, roughly the size of Neptune, so much larger than our own natural satellite. It’s also much further away from its own planet than our moon is from Earth, around 1.8 million miles.

Despite it being so much further away, scientists estimate that it takes up twice as much space in the sky when looking up at it from the surface of Kepler 1625b. All of this information on the potential exomoon, yet scientists still can’t confirm that it is in fact a moon at all, not yet anyway. At the moment, the evidence gathered points towards Kepler 1625b having its own massive moon, but there is no conclusive proof.

Scientists won’t be able to gather more evidence to either prove or disprove the existence of a moon outside our own solar system until Kepler 1625b’s next transit. That will come in May 2019. Using an extremely powerful telescope, researchers will be looking out for a blip in brightness which signifies the planet traveling across its star’s face. If there is another blip, then that would suggest that planet does indeed have another body in tow, whether it be a moon or otherwise.
