Volvo Reveals Self-Driving Pods That Could Be The Future Of Transportation

Volvo is hoping that self-driving pods aren’t as far off as we might think, and has even unveiled potential designs to the world.

There’s no two ways about it, driving can be stressful. Whether you’re sitting in traffic on your way to work or driving for hours and hours to go visit family for the holidays. We wish there was a way around it that didn’t involve having to share slow-moving public transport with hundreds of other people.

Well, there might be a pretty cool alternative sooner than you might think, as reported by Digitial Trends. Volvo has recently unveiled its very own glimpse into the future, but maybe not as far into the future as we might have initially thought. It’s called the Volvo 360c and is a self-driving pod that can take small numbers of passengers from place to place.

As you can see from the picture above, on the outside the 360c looks a lot like a regular car. Yes, the top looks a little like something from The Jetsons, but that is for the passenger’s benefit. That top part is made almost entirely out of tinted glass, allowing its passengers to see the world around them. They’ll have plenty of time to do so too since the driving will all be taken care of by the car.

The similarities to a car begin and end on the surface. Inside you will find very little that will make passengers think of a car. No steering wheel or dashboard, but a customizable area to relax in as you travel. It can become an office space in order to get work done, an entertainment area complete with bookshelves, or even a bedroom so that you can take a nap while you travel to your destination.

Before you rush down to your local Volvo dealership and try to order a 360c, we have some bad news. This isn’t something that is going to be on the market any time soon. Volvo’s senior vice president, Mårten Levenstam simply described it as a “conversation starter” when it comes to the possibilities of what we may be able to do in the future with autonomous driving. Hopefully, though, self-driving pods aren’t as distant a dream as we initially thought.
