LAS VEGAS – There’s been a shooting by the Mandalay Bay casino on Las Vegas Boulevard. At least one officer has reportedly been shot while other officers were pinned down by the shooter.

The shots were first reported around 10:15 p.m., Sunday night.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department had a unit clearing the casino floor.

Police say one suspect is dead in deadliest attack on U.S. soil since 9/11

More than 50 people are dead and over 200 injured after a gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of a hotel on a crowd at a country-music concert in Las Vegas on Sunday evening, in the deadliest attack on U.S. soil since the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. of September 11, 2001.

What happened? The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department police tweeted at 10:38 p.m. local time that they were “investigating reports of an active shooter” near the Mandalay Bay Casino, asking people to steer clear of the area.

A large crowd of people were attending an open-air country music festival at the Mandalay Bay Casino, owned and operated by MGM Resorts International MGM, -5.65% on the Vegas strip. As country star Jason Aldean was performing, a succession of shots rang out, wounding and killing several in the audience.

Joseph Lombardo, the sheriff of the Las Vegas police department, said the shooter opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort. That suspect is dead, and the authorities are not looking for any other shooters.

How many have been injured? Scenes of panic surfaced on social media, with users posting videos and photos of people fleeing a concert. Some concertgoers mistook what sounded like prolonged gunshots for fireworks. Other images shared showed injured individuals lying on the ground.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department tweeted there is “in excess of 50 deceased and over 200 injured individuals,” citing a press conference with Joseph Lombardo, the sheriff of the Las Vegas police department.

Who is the suspect?

Stephen Paddock, Las Vegas mass murderer

Police did not initially name the suspected ”Lone Wolf” gunman, but he was later identified by Lombardo as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock from Mesquite, Nevada.

Officers engaged with Paddock on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay, Lombardo said. A SWAT team used an explosive to get into the room.

“We do not know what his belief system was at this time. We believe he is the sole aggressor at this point and the scene is static,” Lombardo said.

The police said they were “confident” they had the suspect’s companion, Marilou Danley, custody, said the Twitter account of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. She is thought to have been traveling with the shooter.
