If you thought the stories about Harvey Weinstein couldn’t get worse, well, brace yourself, they’re about to.
It was bad enough that major Democratic donor Weinstein now has numerous allegations from dozens of women alleging everything from harassment to rape.
But now it appears that his predilections are not confined to adults.
Well-known actress Kate Beckinsale has now revealed that when she was only 17, Weinstein was sexually inappropriate with her at a hotel in London.
In a dramatic post on Instagram, the “Underworld” actress recalled an incident that has stuck with her for years.
“I was called to meet Harvey Weinstein at the Savoy Hotel when I was 17. I assumed it would be in a conference room which was very common. When I arrived, reception told me to go to his room,” she explained.
“He opened the door in his bathrobe. I was incredibly naive and young and it did not cross my mind that this older, unattractive man would expect me to have any sexual interest in him. After declining alcohol and announcing that I had school in the morning, I left uneasy but unscathed,” the actress continued.
She then revealed something which showed how indiscriminate Weinstein was in his actions.
“A few years later, he asked me if he had tried anything with me in that first meeting. I realized he couldn’t remember if he had assaulted me or not,” she recalled.
In other words, it would have been perfectly common for him to go after a minor. Yikes!
Beckinsale said that even after that, over the years, he kept trying things with her.
“I said ‘no’ to him professionally many times over the years — some of which ended up with him screaming at me, calling me a c**t and making threats,” she wrote. “Some of which made him laughingly tell people, ‘Oh, Kate lives to say no to me.’”
Beckinsale said that it tells you something about the business when these actions are the “status quo” and that “standing up for herself” “undoubtedly harmed my career.” She never felt supported by anyone in the industry as to these actions.
Beckinsale also noted that she had a male friend who knew that a young actress was supposed to be having a meeting with Weinstein. Based on the experience that he knew that Beckinsale had with Weinstein, he warned the other young actress about him.
But, the male friend later received a call from Weinstein saying he’d never be in “another Miramax film.” Turns out the actress he warned had already allegedly begun sleeping with Weinstein and had told him about the warning.
Beckinsale ended her story asking, “Let’s stop allowing our young women to be sexual cannon fodder, and let’s remember that Harvey is an emblem of a system that is sick, and that we have work to do.”
This is indeed pretty sick.
But part of the problem was that people covered up and no one listened to the victims. NBC failed to cover the story, Ronan Farrow had to go elsewhere to get it done in The New Yorker. It might have broken years ago in the New York Times in 2004, but allegedly Matt Damon and Russell Crowe got the story killed.
And since the Weinstein story broke, revelations are now dropping about other people in Hollywood and their involvement in harassment or abuse including Ben Affleck, Oliver Stone and Amazon’s Roy Price.
Let’s hope that this does indeed cause a chain reaction to stop this kind of abuse that seems to have been known but unaddressed for so long.
